Receiving a summons for a traffic violation, including drunk driving, can possibly result in points against your driver's license, mandatory license suspension and possibly jail time, depending on the circumstances.

Pittsburgh police recently issued a summons for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol involving the former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion, Paul Spadafora. The 36-year-old boxer was arrested in Jefferson Hills after a police stop that occurred in the late evening hours.

Allegedly, a Pennsylvania police officer saw an SUV turn right on a red light from Jefferson Boulevard onto Route 51, which is a 40 mph zone. According to the police officer, the SUV was speeding. The officer says that the driver was traveling at 66 mph.

As a result, the police officer pulled the driver over. Allegedly, the driver smelled of alcohol. The police officer then administered a field sobriety test, which the driver supposedly failed. Police transported the boxer to Jefferson Regional Medical Center to draw his blood. However, the driver refused to take the blood test.

In Pennsylvania, a blood test refusal can lead to a suspension of your driver's license for one year. However, with the help of an experienced DUI attorney, it is possible to overcome the recommendation of a driver's license suspension.

Even if there is enough evidence that suggests that a driver's license suspension is appropriate, many times it is possible to gain a delay in a suspension for six months or more. Such a delay can be helpful for drivers to figure out how they can get where they need to go by having some more time to plan for a driver's license suspension.
