When convicted of a DUI charge, there are a number of different penalties that a driver can face. Depending on the circumstances, one of those penalties could be a driver's license suspension. For a driver, that means that his or her driving privileges are taken away for a definite period of time, typically for a year.
Being caught driving on a suspended license can also lead to increased penalties as well. One woman from Greencastle, Pennsylvania, was charged with driving with a suspended license. But she was also charged with drunk driving on top of two counts of aggravated assault.
She is currently being held in jail. She had been driving when two officers pulled her over; her vehicle was allegedly swerving into the parking lane and even up onto a curb. When the two officers approached the vehicle, the woman got out of the car.
She exhibited signs of intoxication, including being unable to walk straight. According to the officers, she told them that she was drunk and then tried to walk away. They administered two field sobriety tests which she failed. The two officers then transported her to the hospital where she became uncooperative and refused to take a blood test.
The two charges for aggravated assault resulted from the woman's attempt to get away from the officers when they tried to put her into the squad car. She apparently kicked one of the officers in the groin and the smacked an officer in the head. The two officers did not suffer any serious injuries.
It is unclear how severe the penalties could be for this woman. It is likely that they will be greater than penalties for simply having a DUI and driving on a suspended license. The two counts of aggravated assault could increase fines and even lengthen a jail sentence.
